Faces to Watch For

I'm really looking forward to all of the excitement that will surround such a rich cultural event.

--Todd DeShields Smith

Todd is the newly-appointed executive director of the Gibbes Museum of Art, and he recently relocated to Charleston from Knoxville. This marks his inaugural Spoleto experience.

According to Todd, the first complete collection of works created by Edward Hopper while in Charleston during the spring of 1929 will be on display at the museum beginning May 26.

I attended a lovely preview of "Painters in Paradise: The Masterworks Bermuda Collection," and it is a gem of an exhibition.

Festival patrons are notorious night owls. From productions that spark lively debate over post-show cocktails to artists who spill onto the downtown streets after a lively performance (the flamenco dancers making their way down King Street at the stroke of midnight some years back is a sight I will long remember), the festival nightlife is riveting. The Gibbes will remain open until 8 p.m. on most nights, so make it a part of your festival related activity
